SDI La Farga LLC is increasing production capacity at its facility in New Haven by adding a second furnace which is used to melt recycled copper. The expansion, first announced in November, will allow the company to hire additional staff, produce copper 24 hours a day and increase capacity by 250 million pounds annually.

“We are extremely excited to begin this next chapter in the history of SDI La Farga,” stated SDI La Farga president Kurt Breischaft. “We continually look for new and better ways to serve our customers, and this expansion as well as our amazing team will help us do exactly that. We look forward to offering more choices of high-quality copper rod and wire to customers throughout the Midwest.”

The plant reclaims scrap copper, refines it, and then produces copper rod and wire that’s sold to a variety of industries.

SDI La Farga LLC is a joint venture between Fort Wayne-based Steel Dynamics Inc. and the La Farga Group based in Barcelona, Spain.

When the expansion plans were announced last fall, the company said the project would create up to 30 new jobs by the end of 2021. SDI La Farga currently employs 74 people.
