NA
invests 62.5m euros and creates 40 new jobs at its Lünen site
Lünen, 7 October 2008 – Up until 2011, Norddeutsche
Affinerie AG (NA) is going to invest a further 62.5 million euros in the ex=
pansion
of the Kayser Recycling System (KRS) at its recycling site in Lünen, in
the shape of the KRS-Plus project. This will also lead to the creation of 4=
0 new
jobs. The decision was announced today at the ground-breaking ceremony for a
new warehouse for KRS recycling raw materials, which completes the implemen=
tation
of an emissions reduction programme agreed with the authorities in 2006. At=
the
same time, further measures for reducing emissions beyond those proposed in=
the
original concept were also announced.
“Thanks to our leading international position in metal recyclin=
g,
we are able to contribute significantly to the conservation of resources, e=
specially
in a country like Germany, which lacks raw materials of its own,”
explained Dr. Bernd Drouven, Chairman of the Executive Board at Norddeutsche
Affinerie AG. “The KRS-Plus project will contribute substantially to =
ensuring
that Lünen remains a viable recycling location despite drastic increas=
es
in the price of energy, and it will safeguard the jobs there for a long tim=
e to
come.”
The investments include a second furnace, allowing the KRS process to=
be
switched from batch processing to continuous smelting. The overall cost of =
62.5
million euros includes 17 million euros just for the waste gas purification
plants and other environmental protection measures. The processing of compl=
ex
recycling materials of varying quality and composition, such as metal-beari=
ng industrial
residues, copper-bearing shredded material, and electrical and electronic
scrap, will increase to a level of up to 145,000 tonnes a year—doubli=
ng
the present-day capacity for processing such materials. All in all, the KRS=
will
then be able to process up to 350,000 tonnes a year. The 40 additional jobs
resulting from the KRS-Plus project will increase the overall workforce at =
NA’s
Lünen plant by almost 9%, to approx. 500.
“This investment underscores our strategy of returning a wide r=
ange
of recycling raw materials to the materials cycle by environmentally friend=
ly way.
At the same time it allows us to secure the group’s supply of copper,=
”
said Dr. Michael Landau, who is on the Executive Board of Norddeutsche
Affinerie AG and in charge of the recycling and precious metals sectors.
Since taking over Hüttenwerke Kayser AG (HK) in Lünen in 2000, NA has invested some € 78m towards improving the technology used there and impro=
ving environmental
protection. About 70% of this went towards environmental protection =
measures.
Since 1990, specific CO2 emissions have been reduced by 65%, spe=
cific
dust emissions by more than 70%.

Over
the past two years alone, NA has invested in waste gas purification,
reinforcing storage areas and building a warehouse for shredded electronic =
scrap
as part of an emissions reduction programme worked out in association with =
the
authorities in charge. The final item in this programme is the construction=
of
a new warehouse for recycling materials, the ground-breaking ceremony for w=
hich
took place today in the presence of guests from the field of business and
politics. The emissions reduction programme was originally budgeted at 10 m=
illion
euros. Over the next two years, measures over and beyond this programme, su=
ch
as the construction of additional filter plants, will mean additional inves=
tments
of some 25 million euros. Thus, including the KRS-Plus project announced to=
day,
NA will be investing almost 90 million euros at the Lünen site by 2011=
.
