NorthEast, U.S.A. - $1B Investment in Upstate National Grid

National Grid is prepared to invest approximately $1 billion in projects in upstate New York, with the addition of 500 New York jobs. National Grid said Wednesday it has signed a five-year contract with NorthEast Power Alliance to help provide part of its U.S. electricity transmission investment program.

NorthEast Power Alliance, a joint venture between AMEC, R.G. Vanderweil Engineers and Michels Corp., will work on transmission projects throughout National Grid’s upstate service territory. The contract is part of National Grid’s network investment program. The company has hundreds of thousands of electric customers across upstate New York.

“The size of our investment in New York meant we had to look at new ways to ensure we implement our investment program safely and efficiently,” said Masheed Saidi, National Grid’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, U.S. Transmission. ”This contract will enable the backbone of our electricity transmission network to deliver reliable service to our customers for years to come.”

The contract is one of two that will deliver a total of around $1.7 billion toward National Grid’s U.S. transmission investment program over the next five years in New York and New England. The company owns more than 8,600 miles of electricity transmission lines and approximately 1,000 substations across upstate New York and New England.

A separate, $700 million contract has been inked with another joint venture — the New Energy Alliance — to work on National Grid’s network primarily in the New England region. That contract will result in the creation of 500 New England jobs.
