Its Down The Wire …and Cable Show We Go
05 Jun 2018
The E-BEAM team was on the road showcasing the power of electrons in May this time in Nashville for the Wire Expo hosted by the Wire Association International (WIA). Always a great investment for us as we learn from thought leaders and catch up with wire and cable industry colleagues. And who doesn’t want to visit Nashville? Have you seen our musical Crash Course on Crosslinkable Polymers. We love country music and crosslinking. Which is why we packed our bags, electron expertise and headed to Nashville.
The Wire Association International (WAI), Inc., founded in 1930, and is a global technical society for the wire and cable industry. The annual Wire Expo gathers all the suppliers and many of our customers too. It is a great opportunity for our team to share and learn best practices, observe industry trends, and even explain to the benefits of electron beam crosslinking over other methods such as chemical crosslinking.
Here at E-BEAM, we frequently use our high-energy electrons to crosslink jacketed wire and cable products. Why? Electrons crosslink the polymer molecules into a permanently altered 3D configuration that improves performance characteristics without changing the existing dimensional properties. Crosslinking of the polymer jacket can enhance structural performance, such as improved temperature, chemical, stress, and abrasion resistance.
These cables then can be used in the automotive, aerospace, and communications industries, to name a few. E-beam crosslinking, unlike chemical crosslinking, does not limit jacketing materials, minimum wall thicknesses, or line speeds, and does not require the use of special equipment for hazardous chemicals or SDS documentation. Additionally, e-beam treated wire and cable products do not contain peroxide byproducts or unreacted residuals.
The big question we are always being asked: what polymers are suitable for the jacketing crosslinking process? We have seen success with polymers like: PVC, ETFE, PVDF, polyolefin, EPDM, CPE, Hypalon, EVA, Neoprene rubber, and ethylene-propylene rubber.
