Eatontown New Jersey - Elmer "Ace" Godwin (1920 - 2009) in memorial by John Barteld CEO/Director IWCS, Inc

The wire and cable industry lost a legendary leader and friend in late February when Elmer "Ace" Godwin passed away.

An electronics engineer, Ace worked with the US Army Electronics Command Research and Development Laboratories at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1979, Ace joined the International Wire and Cable Symposium as its CEO/Director. Ace led the IWCS for 23 years, retiring once again in 2002.

Ace came from a very humble background in rural Virginia, having been raised by his grandparents on their farm. His education commenced in a one room, segregated school house on his grandparents' farm, where the value of education became deeply embedded in him. Eventually leaving the farm for further education, Ace faced the realities of a segregated country in the pre-World War II era. Joining the US Army early in the war, Ace became a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the all black 223rd Fighter Squadron. Ace distinguished himself during his service to the country, being awarded a Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge while serving in Italy.

After the war, Ace continued his pursuit of education, first at Monmouth College and eventually at Rutgers University, where he received his BS degree in engineering. He then went to work as a civilian for the US Army. He met his beloved wife, Corrynne, at Fort Monmouth, marrying in 1946. Ace became a leading international lecturer and authority on wire and cable engineering, and contributed significantly to the growing International Wire and Cable Symposium, which was also headquartered at Fort Monmouth. His migration to the leadership of the IWCS was viewed as a natural step in his dedication to the industry and to his interest in advancements in the technology.

Raising his family in Shrewsbury, NJ, Ace became a deeply involved volunteer for community service and his church. The list of organizations to which Ace dedicated his time and service is extensive, as he always had the time for a good cause. His service to his country was ultimately recognized with the award of the Congressional Gold Metal, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 2007.

To honor Ace's commitment to education, a scholarship fund was endowed at Rutgers University upon his retirement from the IWCS. Ace's family and friends encourage donations to that fund in his honor. Details are available from the IWCS office.

In a fitting culmination to a rich life, Ace attended the inauguration of President Obama in January with colleagues from the Tuskegee Airmen and was featured in interviews with NJ television stations. He recognized what a long and sometimes difficult path his life had followed, but he cherished every moment, taking pride in his personal and professional accomplishments, the progress of his country in achieving equality for all, and, most importantly, his warm and loving family and huge circle of friends. We will all miss him greatly.

On a personal note, I have had the honor of knowing Ace for only the past six years, but Ace continued to "look over my shoulder" at the operations of the IWCS. He always knew when I was in the office in Eatontown, and would stop by to "say hello" and visit for a few minutes. He was keenly interested in the success of the IWCS and always available to offer a kind word of advice, or just to offer encouragement when obstacles loomed. I shall miss him!

Luxembourg - Arcelor CEO Mr Guy Dolle to be replaced
Arcelor and Mittal Steel merger claimed its first victim with an announcement that Arcelor’s CEO Mr Guy Dolle would be replaced. Arcelor chairman Mr Joseph Kinsch told in a press conference in Luxembourg held jointly with Mr LN Mittal that the combined steel group, to be known as Arcelor-Mittal, is to name a new chief. Mr Kinsch told reporters "I have spoken to Guy Dolle and he thinks that to implement the merger we should now choose a new chief executive." The announcement comes as no surprise. While the various measures to avoid the merger raised the eventual evaluation of the Arcelor shares they also hurt the company and certainly was not in the shareholders best interest regardless of the outcome of the merger talks. Mr. Dolle, 64 and due to retire in 15 months, had been scathing in his initial reaction when Mittal Steel's offer was announced in January, denigrating its products and the value of its assets. For the next five months he scrambled to fortify Arcelor's defenses, promoting a merger with Severstal in hope of creating an entity too big for Mittal Steel to swallow.
