Pawtucket Rhode Island - Teknor Apex achieves UL component recognition for a wide range of RoHS-compliant vinyl compounds
| Teknor Apex has achieved UL component recognition for a wide range of non-lead stabilized (NLS) vinyl compounds for the wire and cable industry, enabling companies to manufacture products that comply with the European Union’s recent ‘RoHS’ legislation and similar directives expected in China, Korea, and California, the Vinyl Division of Teknor Apex announced today. Teknor Apex will offer visitors to its IWCS / Focus exhibit (Booths 219 and 221) a newly published list of 84 representative RoHS-compliant grades, including general-purpose compounds and a large number that were formulated for UL component recognition and have now achieved it. “The new list is only a sampling of the products Teknor Apex can supply to wire and cable manufacturers,” said industry manager Mike Patel. “We can now produce NLS counterparts to virtually any of the thousands of compounds in our database.” The new compounds include Apex (R) flexible vinyl formulations and Flexalloy (R) vinyl thermoplastic elastomers for electronic interconnect cable, data and voice cable, appliance wire, automotive wire, flexible cords, building wire, and fixture wire. The products cover a wide spectrum of temperature ratings and hardnesses and include extrusion and molding grades. There are formulations for clarity, sunlight-resistance, oil-resistance, and specific flammability requirements. “Our NLS compounds closely duplicate their conventional lead-stabilized counterparts in processing and physical properties, electrical performance, and price,” said Patel. “We are now supplying these products from Teknor Apex plants in the U.S., from our Singapore Polymer Corporation business in Asia, and from manufacturing partners in Europe.” For Brochure and spec sheet use this link

Providence Rhode Island - Highlights from last weeks Wire & Cable Focus 2005
| Teknor Apex Company, which will introduce it's new FreeFlex compounds at IWCS/Focus. The new compounds are the first plasticizer-free vinyl compounds for wire and cable, according to Mike Patel, industry manager for the Vinyl Division of Teknor Apex. "FreeFlex products withstand harsh winter conditions without embrittlement and surpass conventional vinyl in retaining their original mechanical properties after prolonged use," Patel told wirenews. "While standard vinyl typically loses some of the plasticizer additive that is used to render it flexible, our new FreeFlex compounds derive their flexibility from elastomeric ingredients that are permanently alloyed with PVC." Patel said. Teknor Apex introduced five FreeFlex grades with Shore C hardnesses ranging from 89 to 92 and brittle points from -26 to -56 deg. C. Potential jacketing uses include cables for harsh outdoor environments, military-specification coaxial cables, tray cables, and industrial cables. Highly flame-resistant, low-smoke formulations can also be provided for custom applications such as indoor/outdoor data cables, Patel said

Providence, RI - Report on IWCS/Focus
| At the IWCS/Focus conference, Dr.Arnab Sakar’s (Vice President Nextrom U.S.A., Inc.) presented a view of the Restructuring in the Fiber and Cable Industry. This presentation created quite a stir within the fiber & cable manufacturers and the attendees. Dr. Sakar presented a perspective of the industry with very little sign of rebound and more restructuring in place. One of the main emphasis was the move towards fiber becoming a commodity which would affected by demand in the world market. His belief is also that new plants can be set up in LLC (low cost countries) with new technology and be profitable in commodity environments. As we continue to see the industry change and adjust to the “new wire & cable” industry, it will be interesting to see how the markets develop.

Providence, RI - A report on IWCS/Focus
| IWCS/Focus 2005 has been a well attended conference with plenty of development courses, executive reports, exhibits, and plenary sessions. The overall perspective has been the discussion of FTTx (Fiber to the (curb, node, premise, home)). This move towards fiber in the U.S. has been fueled by the aggressive deployment of fiber by Verizon and other companies. The estimation of FTTP subscribers worldwide will pass 4 million by the end of 2005 and potentially reach the 7 million subscribers.

Milan - Prysmian announces major presence at IWCS
| Prysmian Cables & Systems (the former cable business of Pirelli) will be playing a major role at next week’s International Wire and Cable Symposium (IWCS), being held at Providence, RI from 13th to 16th November. The company, whose US headquarters is in Lexington, South Carolina – where it has been producing optical cables for the country’s telecommunications market for more than 20 years - will present four technical papers covering a wide range of topics including:- new designs and applications of optical fibre, advanced manufacturing methods for optical cable, and new construction concepts for Optical Ground Wire (OPGW). Prysmian's participation at this key event in the cable calendar emphasizes the company's determination to demonstrate that it is still very much 'business as usual' following the launch of its new name and that the ongoing commitment to R & D and product improvement remains as strong as ever. Lexington-based Brian DiLascia, Vice President and General Manager of Prysmian Communications Cables and Systems USA, LLC, said: "The message we want to give at IWCS is very clear. Our name may have changed but our approach to the technical challenges of the business remains the same - success in our market is only achieved through a continuous effort to improve and innovate across our full product range, at all times focusing on the needs of our customers who require the highest quality, cost effective solutions."
