Davis-Standard Issued New Patent
for Improved Temperature Control
(Pawcatuck, Conn.)--A
newly patented technology from Davis-Standard improves upon an existing
adaptive reset algorithm to provide temperature control precision of +/- 0.1
degree Fahrenheit regardless of processing conditions. The new patent, entitled
“Extruder Temperature Controller with Stable Temperature Reset,” was issued in
July of this year. Saul Eiva, Davis-Standard’s
software development engineer who designed the new algorithm, said it is more
accurate than previously patented technology.
“Prior to this development, there
was a one degree Fahrenheit temperature deadband in
the reset function. We have improved the algorithm ten-fold by enabling the
actual temperature to more precisely coincide with the set point for each
zone,” explained Eiva. “Davis-Standard is the leader
in dual thermocouple temperature control and the improved temperature reset
makes it even more accurate.”
The reset algorithm memorizes the
thermal loading or temperature conditions of each barrel zone at different
screw speeds. When the screw speed enters a specific range, the algorithm makes
adjustments relative to thermal load to maintain an exact temperature. This
technology is especially beneficial for processes requiring a variety of
materials, large thermal loads and high operating rates.
The new
temperature reset algorithm is available with the dual thermocouple technology
on Davis-Standard’s EPIC III™ and MESA III supervisory control systems. For more information, contact
