IWCS Members and Guests Visit
the Headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels

July 2001 ...

Your IWCS committee gathered 24 June 2001 in Brussels, Belgium. This was the third and final formal planning meeting before the gala 50th Symposium set to convene at Disney's Coronado Springs Hotel in Lake Buena Vista, FL, 12-15 November 2001. The meeting was part of a week long program visiting supporting companies and organizations in Belgium and The Netherlands arranged jointly by IWCS members Dieter Nordmann (Alcatel) and Jim Reese (DSM Desotech).
During the meeting, the final technical program was approved. It will be ready for printing and distribution to the wire & cable community after a few final details are completed. As soon as these last details are finalized, the entire program will be published on this site. So mark those dates on your calendar and stay tuned.
Committee Visits European Parliament Headquarters

Belgium FlagDuring our visit to Belgium, we met with representatives of the International Cablemakers Federation, Cablebel and our Supporting Associate, Europacable at their headquarters in Brussels. We also traveled to Eupen to visit Kabelwerk Eupen.
The Netherlands FlagWe then traveled to The Netherlands and visited both the DSM Research facility in Geleen and DSM Desotech facility in Hoek Van Holland. We concluded our visit to Holland with a meeting at the Draka Comteq complex in Eindhoven.
During each of these visits we had an invaluable opportunity to meet our "customers", to share the IWCS Symposium history, program, goals and objectives and to learn how to improve our "product" and insure its value to the wire & cable community for the next 50 years. We wish to sincerely thank all of our hosts for their gracious hospitality during our journey and look forward to welcoming them at our 50th Symposium in November.

Critical Abstract Review
Members of one of the selection sub-committees pour over submitted Abstracts.

May 2001 ...

Your IWCS committee met on the 9th, 10th and 11th of May in Washington, DC for the second of three formal planning meetings preparing for the 50th IWCS at Disney's Coronado Springs Hotel in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The major agenda item for this meeting was the review of the many Technical Abstracts submitted for consideration. This is always a difficult and challenging task but critical to the success of the Symposium. All Abstracts were reviewed and rated and a tentative Technical Program (again including a Copper, Fiber and Materials Track) was developed. Authors submitting Abstracts should receive disposition notices shortly. Again, the committee wishes to thank those who submitted Abstracts for consideration and regrets that all could not be accepted for presentation.
Sub-committee reviews Abstracts

While the review of Abstracts consumed the majority of the meeting, other tasks were accomplished. A slate of Educational Short courses was approved and the growing list of Exhibitor booths was reviewed. The 50th Anniversary Committee reported on the many special events planned for this historic meeting. Stay tuned, details will be published here as plans are finalized.

February 2001 ...

Your IWCS committee met on 17 to 19 January at Disney's Coronado Springs Hotel in Lake Buena Vista, FL, site of this year's gala 50th anniversary celebration. It was the first of three formal planning meetings preparing for the 50th IWCS Symposium which convenes 12 to 15 November 2001. We are working closely with the Disney organization to insure that the event runs as smoothly as possible.
All aspects of the last Symposium were reviewed and nine standing committees were formed and charged with specific responsibilities. The vast scope of the planning effort can be hinted at by reviewing the names of these committees. They are: Program, Finance, Education, Scholarship, Publicity & Publications, Wire & Cable in the Wireless Environment, as well as the Copper, Fiber and Materials Track committees.
The weeks following the meeting, are focused on our first postal mailing. It includes the official Call for Papers and Hotel Reservation Form (both now posted on this web site), as well as other pertinent information about the upcoming IWCS Symposium. If you are on our mailing lists, you should receive this information package by the end of February.
Another major effort at the present time is the solicitation of candidates for the three IWCS Scholarships to be awarded this year. We have obtained the services of Cristina S. Crays as IWCS Scholarship Coordinator. Note that the deadline for scholarship applications is 1 March 2001.
Finally, we have made some cosmetic changes to our web site, incorporating the IWCS 50th Anniversary logo for instance. Last year's addition of On-Line Symposium Registration was a big success and we will again add that functionality at the appropriate time. Stay tuned for details. As always, we sincerely hope you like these changes and actively seek suggestions for further improvements.

December 2000 ...

Your IWCS Committee would like to extend a sincere "Thank You" to all those who participated in or just attended last month's 49th International Wire & Cable Symposium. It was our second time back to the Atlantic City, New Jersey venue and by all indications it was another successful and rewarding event. Next year's symposium will be a gala celebration of the 50th anniversary of the IWCS and will be held at the Walt Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort.
Speaking of next year's Symposium, there is no rest for the weary. The committee has been planning this special event for most of two years already. Our next major meeting will be in mid-January 2001. Stay tuned for details.
