Utilities serving urban regions across the world face a number of different challenges resulting from ever-increasing load growth, the addition of new distributed and often volatile generation resources, and the demand for improved reliability and continuity of service.
The need for substantial investment in urban grid renewal programmes is well recognised. Yet there is substantial resistance from planning authorities, and the public they serve, to grant the rights of way to install new overhead lines, underground cables or other high-voltage equipment. Hence, the drive to develop innovative technologies that can increase the capacity and flexibility of power infrastructure.

The Carbon Trust, as part of its Offshore Wind Accelerator(OWA), has launched a new competition to fast track the development of new 66kV cables to be used by the offshore wind industry. The goal is to ensure that new 66kV cables are developed in time to be used on Round 3 projects in the UK. Moving from 33kV to 66KV brings a number of benefits including the need for fewer substations, reduce system losses and cutting overall cable requirements.
OWA developers DONG Energy, E.ON, Mainstream Renewable Power, RWE Innogy, ScottishPower Renewables, SSE Renewables, Statkraft, Statoil and Vattenfall, representing 77% (36GW) of the UK's licenced capacity, believe that 66 kV is the optim ...

Brazil will auction by December contracts to build power lines connecting as much as 6,900 megawatts of planned wind farms in an effort to ensure the turbines will be able to send electricity to the grid once they’re installed.
The transmission lines will link 1,200 megawatts of planned projects in the state of Ceara, 1,500 megawatts in Rio Grande do Norte, 1,800 megawatts in Bahia and 2,400 megawatts in Rio Grande do Sul, Mauricio Tolmasquim, president of the government energy-research agency Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica, said today.
Brazil has about 600 megawatts of wind farms in the northeast that are in operation and aren’t delivering energy to the grid because the accomp ...

Employees at Bekaert Steel Wire, 301 Darlington Drive, are celebrating a million man-hours of production without a safety incident. The last reportable incident at the Rome plant occurred on June 5, 2011. Plant Manager Gary Downey, who is serving as the chairman of the Greater Rome Existing Industries Association, said that in the past employees have suffered injuries ranging from broken bones, severed fingers and cuts. “We’ve turned that around here in the last few years to where that’s a non-issue for us,” Downey said.He said there’s been a concerted pushback against the idea of cutting corners and t ...
