| High Conductivity AlumoweldŽ offers three times the conductivity of galvanized steel wire. In addition, the protective aluminum cladding maintains Alumoweld's electrical characteristics throughout the life of the line, while the electrical characteristics of steel wires with other protective coatings often deteriorate over time. Such protection maintains conductivity and enhances overall performance. In addition, each AlumoweldŽ wire is tested for resistivity during manufacture, a practice not generally used for steel. This ensures known electrical properties in AlumoweldŽ products. Corrosion resistance means long life and solid performance. The thick aluminum cladding of AlumoweldŽ--ten percent of the wire radius--provides a high degree of corrosion resistance, resulting in longer service life and reduced maintenance. Accelerated laboratory tests exposing AlumoweldŽ to various types of corrosive conditions have proven that it has corrosion resistance comparable to EC grade aluminum wires. The conditions simulated in the tests included industrial, marine and tropical atmospheres. In addition to laboratory tests, AlumoweldŽ has been used as electrical conductor in utility applications for over 40 years; with many long-term installations to substantiate its corrosion resistance and longevity.
Eliminates corrosion due to galvanic action. Contacts of dissimilar metals, under certain conditions, can cause galvanic corrosion to take place. When AlumoweldŽ is used in combination with solid aluminum wires in ACSR conductors, all contacts are aluminum to aluminum, thereby eliminating the danger of corrosion due to galvanic action. As a result, AlumoweldŽ offers a strength member or core wire for ACSR conductors that matches the long life of solid aluminum members. Combines high strength with low weight. AlumoweldŽ has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than other wires commonly used on overhead lines. Size for size, is has about the same tensile strength as extra-high strength steel wire, but weighs approximately 15 percent less. This high strength-to-weight ratio provides a maximum margin of safety for long-span construction. And, the high strength of Alumoweld's steel core is permanently protected by its thick aluminum covering.
